Pasture at Ecological Research Station Hlyboky Balyky, Ukraine

Bogdan Popov lives and works in Ukraine. We are raising funds through GiveAll2Charity which will allow him to complete the 3LM Holistic Management programme, online.

Bogdan plans to turn, Ecological Research Station Hlyboky Balyky into a demonstration site of holistic pasture management. He also hopes to be able to teach his approach to others in Ukraine. For more information about the programme click here.

We asked Bogdan, "Why is it important for you to take this course?"

Once I learned about holistic management from Allan Savory's book, Holistic Management: A New Framework for Decision-making, I understood that this incredibly powerful and effective approach has the potential to make changes for the better where I live in Ukraine. I got inspired and wanted to use it to help both my projects as well as others. However, I understand that in order to start using Holistic management properly I need training. That’s why it is important for me to take the course.

What is your background?

I have various skills and experiences during my life. I studied ecology (Msc) and worked as a blacksmith and trained other people. I learned and practised permaculture design for many years, taught it and translated Bill Mollison’s book, Permaculture: A Designers' Manual, to Ukrainian and Russian. I focused on eco-sanitation and developed a closed loop wastewater treatment system which was successfully installed. For the last four years I have worked as a director of the Ecological Research Station near Kyiv (www.balyky.org) which is basically a scientific hub and experimental and demo plot for various sustainable  approaches.

What will you do when the course is completed that you can't do right now?

I hope to be able to use holistic management planning for organising the performance of our organisation, creating examples of holistic pasture management at our research and demonstration farm. I also hope to be able to teach this approach to others in Ukraine, and consult with farmers in order to spread the adoption of this approach. I wish to found the Ukranian hub for the Savory Network.

We made a video about our ecological research station recently with English subtitles.

Life, in its truest essence, is not an isolated phenomenon but a system—a complex, interwoven network where every thread contributes to the whole. So does it make more sense to define life as a process rather than as an entity?

At the end of October, Pollardine Farm in Shropshire hosted the 3LM one day Low Stress Livestock Handling course, conducted by Miriam Parker, a livestock behaviourist and independent consultant. Parker transferred her equine skills to cattle and worked with herders across the world. Her work is influenced by her friend, US animal behaviourist Temple Grandin.
