The National Trust awarded Low Sizergh Farm in Kendal a Fine Farm Produce Award for its very tasty eggs. The yolks are a deep orange-yellow, indicative of receiving a portion of their nutrient-dense diet from pasture.
Richard Park told us he would have the layers even if they didn't produce eggs, simply because of the fertility they give to the soil following their dairy cattle. They scratch apart the manure looking for insects, which spreads it around and helps remove pathogens. Plus the hens add their own rich nutrients to the soil.
See their mobile hen house, and ask Richard questions when we go on tour during our upcoming holistic management training programme in Kendal, 18-26 March 2019.
